China's rising Role in Middle East diplomacy

China is the nation that started to challenge the US dominance and also becoming more important in global diplomacy. This nation is also crucial for the Middle East. Nowadays, China plays an important role in mediating between Palestinian groups and forming new relationships.

This is the time when the United State gets a lot of messages from anti-war groups. They urged the US to stop selling weapons to Israel. Also they requested to end the bombing in Gaza. At the same time,  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the U.S. President Biden will likely meet with Netanyahu, but the big focus might be on Netanyahu’s meeting with former President Trump, who might strongly back Israel if he wins the election.

One of the strong supporters of Israel is the United State. Because this nation gives a lot of aid, approximately $300 to Israel in order to strengthen their military force. After the recent attack of Hamas on October 7, 2023, the United State stood in favor of Israel and also opposed the ceasefire efforts at the United Nations. While US policies also got criticism due to the large number of civilian deaths in the Gaza war.

China has now taken on a big role as a mediator in the Middle East, challenging the United State’s  traditional influence. China has also helped Saudi Arabia and Iran come together, which reduces US influence in the region.

Many European countries recognised Palestine as a state. It includes Spain, Ireland and Norway. This recognition changed the international support that also affected the United State and Israel long-lasting relation. Additionally, one of the key nations that resolve the Middle East conflicts is China. It also helps the United State with diplomatic issues in the region.

During Netanyahu’s visit to the US, there were protests at Capitol Hill demanding an end to arms supplies to Israel and a Gaza ceasefire. Reports suggest that Joe Biden and Donald Trump are both set to meet with Netanyahu. Biden is no longer running for president, so the main focus will likely be on Trump, who is a leading presidential candidate and a potential supporter of Israel.

No matter the United State political change, the support for Israel remains the same. Both Democrats and Republicans have consistently backed Israel, with the US providing around $3 billion in aid each year, totaling about $300 billion since 1948. Most of this aid is for military purposes, even though Israel has a relatively small population.

The United State response was very significant, when Hamas fired rockets at Israel. This nation greatly supported Israel by giving them weapons and also sent warships. The United States also stood against the decision of ceasefire at the United Nations. President Joe Biden always stands in favor of Israel, despite the fact that this person has many conflicts with Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. This support clearly highlights that Joe Biden and Israel’s views match with each other, especially on the Gaza war.

Over time, Israel has become more right-wing, which has increased the power of religious extremists and intensified conflicts with Palestinians.

Along with Israel, the United State also faced criticism due to the high number of deaths in the Gaza war. This is because American-weapons are responsible for these deaths and conflicts.

The US recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital but is hesitant to acknowledge a Palestinian state, implying it might only happen if Palestinians are displaced. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Iran are negotiating with China’s help, weakening US influence. This shift could make it harder for Israel to control Gaza as Palestinians unite and present themselves as a single entity globally.

The United States is also worried that Saudi Arabia will make China its strong partner. Also the US is not able to stop Saudia from getting closer to China. Saudi Arabia could see that China is more beneficial for them as compared to the US. The United State is also trying their best to stop influence from Saudi Arabia by working on a ceasefire. But Saudi Arabia does not fully support the USA.

Saudi Arabia is also drifting away from European allies, as shown by Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognizing Palestine. The USA is creating global divisions to compete with China, while China maintains good relations with everyone. The world should support Palestinians and push Israel to end the violence in Gaza.
