Terrorism is not at this limiting point but it rises with the passage of time. Many officials are worried about the instability across the world because of the threats of possible attacks from the groups connected to Islamic State. It includes the ongoing Gaza conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, even troublemakers taking advantage of our weak southern border.
Recently, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray expressed his concern. According to him, this is a tough time as he has not seen too many threats at once in his career. The danger on its peak point before the Hamas attack on Israel. But after the October 7 attack, it has become much more serious since then.
Wray is especially worried about individuals or small groups being inspired by events in the Middle East. He’s also concerned about the possibility of a well-coordinated attack, like the one by ISIS-K in Moscow. What really worries him are the unpredictable threats or “unknown unknowns.”
People did not pay attention to the comments of Wray. This is because their main focus is on other big issues such as this year’s election campaign. Many also think that domestic problems are much more important than foreign terrorism right now. But in order to make the regions safe it is important for everyone to stay updated and also officials should discuss their comments and views on current terrorism issues.
Recently, the National Security Council had a conversation to talk about ISIS-K. It is a group based around northern Afghanistan.
A senior Biden official said there’s no clear sign of a serious plot from them, but they’re keeping a close watch due to changing threats.
At this time, the central focus of agencies is ISIS-K. The way of operating the Taliban changed right after they pushed ISIS-K leaders into Central Asia. According to US officials, they are now playing a big game and doing it very well and wisely.
ISIS-K is recruiting Tajik workers from Russia and Iran. The real purpose is to attack in these countries. For example the recent bombing attack in Kerman took the lives of 95 Iranians. Also 140 Russians killed in an attack in Moscow’s Crocus City Hall. The United StatesUnderstanding the dual security Operations: the European Union and United States in the Red Sea have advanced spying. So, this nation warned both Iran and Russia about these attacks. But this awareness did not prove beneficial. One of the United States officials said that they have a duty to warn on such attacks but these warnings did not seem to work.
It is suspected that ISIS-K might use Central Asian migrants to attempt such attacks in Europe or in the United States. They are changing their way of messaging to target these migrants. Many officials also get information from the potential threats, but they do not have detailed plans yet.
General Michael Erik Kurilla said that without steady pressure, ISIS-K has been able to rebuild and strengthen its networks, creating multiple ways to direct and inspire attacks.
It is very difficult to find out how many people in the United States want to act along ISIS-K or how many want to act alone. One of the senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security mentioned that 50 Central Asian migrants arrived every day in the United States. Adding up to a total more than 10,000 people.
This official stated that the majority of these migrants were legitimate asylum seekers who came through official ports of entry. However, few of them cross the border illegally. This situation makes it difficult to assess the exact risk involved.
Additionally, according to the official, “ We have a thorough screening and vetting process at the border that checks names and other information against classified databases to see if anyone is connected to a network that may pose concern,” the senior DHS official explained. DHS has organized several “repatriation flights” to Uzbekistan recently as the number of undocumented Central Asian migrants has increased.”
The situation is already complex and the Gaza war makes the situation more harmful and dangerous. Wray’s worry about “unknown unknowns” perfectly captures how tricky things are right now. Gen. John Abizaid, who was in charge of the United States forces in the Middle East also issued a warning letter. According to him, everyone should be ready for the long war against Islamist extremism that could last for decades.
This sense of ongoing conflict has come and gone, drawing the United States into two questionable wars and making several presidents try and fail to lessen our involvement in the Middle East. But despite these efforts, the long war is still very much a reality.
